Walter Slezak was born on May 3, 1902, in Vienna, Austria-Hungary (now Austria).

He was the son of Leo Slezak, a renowned opera tenor, which immersed Walter into the world of performance from an early age. His mother, Elisabeth Wertheim, came from a distinguished intellectual background.
