Founder of Haiti

Jean-Jacques Dessalines, the founder and first ruler of the independent Haitian state, was born a slave.

Where was jean-jacques dessalines born

He was baptized as Jacques and initially bore the surname of his first master, Duclos. Later, he was sold to a Creole named Dessalines, who gave him his surname.

Military Career

After the French Revolution, Dessalines joined the rebellion in Haiti and became a general in the revolutionary army.

He served under Toussaint Louverture, the leader of the Haitian national liberation movement. Following Louverture's arrest, Dessalines took command of the anti-colonial uprising.
